Brooklyn EOC – 1974
Family Program for Young Mothers

From Student…to Teacher…to Principal

When Shirley Edwards left college at Kentucky State to get married and start a family, she didn’t realize how much she would want to finish her higher education. Even though she was busy raising four young children almost 10 years later, she recognized the value of participating in the Family Program for Young Mothers at the Brooklyn EOC in 1974. Ms. Edwards points out, “The EOC gave me the opportunity to go to school and get a degree to make a better life for my family. I developed important skills, relationships and resources that still work for me in everything I do.”

After graduating from the EOC, Ms. Edwards knew that she wanted to pursue higher education again. She earned her Associates Degree at New York Tech in 1976 and graduated from Brooklyn College in 1979. In 1981, she earned an M.S. in English and Secondary Administration from Long Island University. She also earned an M.S. in Administration and Supervision from Pace University in 1991.

For over two decades, Ms. Edwards worked as a teacher, a sub-school coordinator, a chief architect of an adult education program for working people, and an effective educational specialist within the New York City public school system. Today, Ms. Edwards is the Principal of the EBC High School for Public Service in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn, New York. The school is a collaboration of East Brooklyn church congregations and the New York State Education Department. Responsible for the entire school – 550 students and 45 teachers – Ms. Edwards takes great pride in achieving a 95% graduation rate. In fact, her high school ranks #1 in Brooklyn for graduating students on time. She also helps her students give back to the community with internships in local hospitals and soup kitchens. Additionally, she makes sure that her graduates know about the educational opportunities at the Brooklyn EOC.
