Westchester EOC – 1987 Finding Success from the West Indies to Westchester When 16-year-old Sujata Gooljar immigrated with her family from Trinidad, West Indies, to the United States, she didn’t know much about American culture and customs. For example, in Trinidad, the tradition is to respect elders so much that younger people are taught to avert their eyes and only speak when spoken to. That can make it difficult to do a successful job interview! To learn the skills that would help her get a job, Dr. Gooljar enrolled in basic office skills, word processing and data entry courses at the Westchester EOC in 1987. Dr. Gooljar remarks, “The EOC was the first time in my life that I was exposed to so many different cultures in one place. My instructors helped me adapt to American culture and prepared me to work in the business world.” After graduating from the EOC, one of Dr. Gooljar’s first jobs was working for the Allstate Insurance Company, followed by a position with the Ciba-Geigy Corporation in the Plastics & Additives Division. To aid in her professional advancement, she earned a succession of degrees at Iona College – a B.S. in Business Administration (1990), an MBA (1992) and a PMC (1993) – all while maintaining her day job. In 1996, Dr. Gooljar earned her PhD in Business Administration from Kensington University. For the past 21 years, Dr. Gooljar has worked in various divisions at IBM, managing budgets in excess of $50 million. Currently, Dr. Gooljar works as the Global Sales Operations Manager in the Financial Services Sector, where she helps set revenue and expense targets. She manages the weekly tracking and reporting on IBM sales teams to monitor performance and progress for better sales decisions. |
