Long Island EOC – 1975
GED & College Prep Programs

An Incredible Educational Odyssey Comes Full Circle

After becoming widowed with two young children, Veronica Henry wanted to continue her education to become a nurse. But she had never received her high school diploma in Jamaica where she grew up. So she attended the Long Island EOC to earn her GED and take College Prep courses. Dr. Henry states, “The EOC counselors were excellent in helping me plan out my career path.”

Her EOC experience was the first stop on an educational odyssey. First, she earned an Associates of Science degree in Nursing from Farmingdale State College – and then a B.S. in Nursing from the University at Stony Brook. She went on to earn a Master of Science in Health Science from the University at Stony Brook and an M.S. in Nursing from Adelphi University. The peak of her educational accomplishments was earning her EdD from Teacher’s College, Columbia University. She added a Professional Certificate from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Dr. Henry used her education to teach for 16 years in the Nursing Department at Farmingdale State College, attaining the rank of full Professor. She also worked as the Clinical and Administrative Coordinator of Antihypertensive Research Studies, Nurse Education at the Veteran’s Administration Medical Center. In addition, she was the Health Education Consultant at Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Greater New York.

Since 1998, Dr. Henry’s journey led her back to where it began – at the Long Island EOC – only this time she’s in charge. She is the Dean/Executive Director and also functions as the Chief Executive Officer and the Chief Academic Officer. She manages over 1,400 students each year and more than 100 faculty and staff across three Long Island EOC locations. Currently, she is developing alternative programs for students – such as a Licensed Practical Nurse program. Dr. Henry also actively serves on many community and professional boards on Long Island – and is the recipient of many educational honors and awards.
