Rochester EOC 1982 Overcoming a Language Barrier to Find Success When Francisco Larubia Prado first came to the United States from Spain, he already had a Master’s degree from Universidad Complutense of Madrid but he had never spoken English. He had limited financial means to pay for a private school to learn the language, so he enrolled in the English as a Second Language Program at the Rochester EOC. His EOC experience helped him not only learn English, but also the culture of living and working in the United States. Dr. Larubia Prado fondly remembers, “The EOC English course was fundamental for me and my career. The excellent teacher helped students from many different cultures and backgrounds feel like a single entity in pursuit of a common goal: learning English so they could help themselves.” The EOC gave Dr. Larubia Prado the fundamental means to continue on to graduate school and pursue his goal of teaching others. After graduating from the EOC in 1983, he performed military service in Spain and taught in Madrid. Then, he continued his graduate education at the University at Buffalo, where he received his Masters degree in Spanish in 1986. He went on to Cornell University and received his official Doctorate in Spanish (Romance Languages) in 1990. Dr. Larubia Prado has been a professor at Princeton University and Johns Hopkins University. He is now a full Professor in the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. He has devoted himself to teaching as well as publishing and editing numerous books, articles, and papers, in both English and Spanish. In addition, Dr. Larubia Prado travels as a noted speaker throughout the United States and abroad. |
